Retinal Camera Project The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, NY is the itskind in the Southern Tier of New York and Northern Tier of Pennsylvania. Each year, dozens of premature are treated here, some weighing less than a pound and as early as 24 weeks gestation. One of the many problems these babies must avoid is the growth of errant blood vessels in the retina which can lead to diminished visionor even blindness. The nearest Ophthalmologist who treats this type of situation is located in Rochester. orderto be examined by this doctor, the baby must be transported in an ambulance with all of the equipment personnelnecessary for a preemie. It is not uncommon for the doctor to see the baby and decide that it is not forlaser intervention but to return the next day or the day after that for a recheck. Sometimes, even though appearsthat laser treatment will probably be required, the vessels can stop growing on their own so no treatment If the NICU had a Retinal Camera made specifically for use on premature babies, the staff could tosend real time images by computer to the doctor in Rochester who could then advise when therapy was warranted.
